Trump Calls for ‘Strong Background Checks’ After Mass Shootings

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Monday called for Republicans and Democrats to work together to strengthen background checks for prospective gun buyers and pass new immigration laws.

Mr. Trump’s comments, made in an early morning Twitter post, come as the country mourns two deadly mass shootings over the weekend in Texas and Ohio that killed 29 people.

Mr. Trump, who is scheduled to speak publicly later Monday morning, condemned the shootings. He has not addressed a manifesto that the authorities said was written by the gunman in El Paso, Texas; the manifesto echoes Mr. Trump’s language on immigration.

It was not immediately clear what kind of background check Mr. Trump was referring to in his tweet. In February, the House voted to lengthen the amount of time for the F.B.I. to review backgrounds of potential gun buyers.
